Fanworks
First and foremost, I’m a writer – but by that same token, I can’t help but to feel inspired and passionate about a multitude of other creative enterprises. I believe that it’s important as a modern writer to be not just capable but enthusiastic about collaboration, and about taking on and adapting the ideas of others. In that way, I view fan fiction not just as arena for practice and homage, but as a legitimate artform in itself, one that I’m proud to participate in. Some of my favorite (and arguably best) writing is fan fiction – I’ve included a short selection below.
The Mistress: The Rise and Regrets of Tora Naprem
Multi-chapter series: drama, romance. An ongoing series started in November, 2015, The Mistress – based on Star Trek: Deep Space 9 – is an intrigue and action-filled drama starring Tora Naprem, mother of Tora Ziyal and mistress of the villainous Cardassian Gul Dukat. After 30 years of internment in the Occupation of Bajor, Tora Naprem meets Gul Dukat shortly after he becomes the 8th Prefect of the planet. When Dukat selects Naprem to become his personal aide, the two go from being reluctant allies to sharing an intimate friendship that soon threatens to become more. But even as their bond grows stronger, tragedy looms on the horizon. Sooner or later, Naprem and Dukat will be forced to answer for their love — to their families, their peoples, and, perhaps most importantly, to themselves. (Read it here.)
